Building a Business Around What You Make
ABOUT THE EVENT

Join us for a conversation with Char Miller-King, The Wooden Maven, as she shares her journey from woodworker and maker to entrepreneur, educator, content creator, and nationally recognized woodworking personality.

Char will share what it looked like to build a business and brand around her craft, how opportunities beyond simply selling what she made became part of that journey, and some of the lessons she learned along the way.

We’ll explore how makers can turn their skills into a business, build a brand around what they create, and recognize opportunities they may not have originally imagined.

Whether you're already selling what you make, thinking about taking a side hustle more seriously, or simply wondering where your creative skills could lead, come ready to learn, connect, and ask questions.

This is a conversation, not a lecture.

What happens when something you love making starts becoming something more?

MEET CHAR MILLER-KING

Char Miller-King, better known as The Wooden Maven, is an Atlanta-based woodworker, educator, content creator, and entrepreneur.

What began with building a piece of furniture she couldn't afford grew into a passion for woodworking and eventually a career spanning teaching, brand partnerships, speaking, television, and national woodworking publications.

Char also has a special connection to Decatur Makers. She taught woodworking in our community and previously served on our Board of Directors, making this Founders Forum a bit of a homecoming.

We're excited to welcome her back to share how she turned her craft into a brand and built opportunities around what she loves to make.

ABOUT THE FORUM

Founders Forum is a conversation series from Decatur Makers connecting makers, creators, and aspiring entrepreneurs with experienced founders and business leaders.

Each Forum explores a different part of the entrepreneurial journey through real-world stories, practical insights, and plenty of audience conversation.

Whether you're wondering if an idea has potential, already building something, or simply curious about entrepreneurship, Founders Forum is a place to learn from people who have been there, ask questions, and connect with others figuring it out too.

Hobby or Business?
Is My Idea Worth Pursuing

Featuring Scott Grimes

Founder & Former CEO, Cardlytics

We kicked off Founders Forum in August 2026 with entrepreneur, investor, engineer, and lifelong maker Scott Grimes for a conversation about one of the biggest questions makers face: When is something a great hobby, and when might it have the potential to become a business?

Scott shared lessons from his entrepreneurial journey and challenged attendees to think about customers, opportunity, growth, and what they actually want from the things they create.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN
In this session, you'll explore:

Founders Forum is where we start the conversation. Makerpreneur Lab is being developed as a place to do the work.

We're developing a hands-on, multi-week program for makers, creators, inventors, and aspiring entrepreneurs who want to explore turning something they make or create into a viable business.

We're still shaping the program, and we want our maker community to help us build it.
